Overconsumption?

If you look for information/figures on resource use or are just interested in this crucial topic, I can recommend the excellent report by SERI/Global 2000/Friends of the Earth Europe entitled ‘Overconsumption? Our use of the world’s natural resources’ available in english and german.

In addition to the theory or data there are some very good case studies such as on mobile phones or recycling in Flanders.

As a key figure to remember: in Europe, natural resources consumption is around 45 kg per day vs 90 in North America and 10 in Africa. Europe has the highest net-imports of resources per capita per year: almost 3 tonnes. This underlines our vulnerability/dependance in this area as our economy has to rely on key resources from third countries. The essence of trade but trade now at highly unsustainable levels…
