Gone to waste

The NGO ‘Friends of the Earth europe’ recently issued a report on waste management and more precisely on the valuable resources which are just burned or burried because of lack of recycling and resource effiency.

The report underlines that around half of the key recyclable materials available in the municipal waste were sent for disposal instead of re-use/recycling. If this material had been recylced it would have saved about 148 million tonnes of CO2 eq.(= 47 million cars off the road per year) and this scrapped material had an estimated market value of € 5.25 billion (whire were burnt or dumped in landfills…

Some EU Member States still have a very weak recycling rate of key materials such as glass: only aroud 10 to 20% of glass is recycled in countries like Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, Slovakia…Huge losses of wealth while all those countries are not among the richest in the EU…

Raw materials gap – Rupture de matières premières

The German industry recently warned of a possible raw material gap which could threaten the growth of the German industry.
This sounds as a further strong message in favour of radically increased resource efficiency…
